Our patient underwent a combination procedure of lower eyelid lift (lower blepharoplasty) and a phenol peel. The surgery was performed under sedation anaesthesia as a daycase at the Clinic. She wanted to rejuvenate her face and particularly the dark under eye area, and she looks fantastic.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, serves to rejuvenate the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both by removing excess skin/muscle and fat, as well as reshaping the eye.

A youthful eye typically has smooth, wrinkle-free skin on the upper and lower eyelids and absence of puffiness. However, with increasing age eyelid skin can become lax and wrinkled. This combined with puffiness can give the eyes a tired look. The lax and sagging upper eyelid skin can also fold over the eyelashes causing ‘hooding’ and in severe cases compromise vision.

Lower blepharoplasty is suited for patients who develop puffiness of the lower eyelid. If there is significant ageing of the midface as well, lower blepharoplasty alone may not achieve the rejuvenating effect that is desired. For such patients, a combination of lower blepharoplasty and midface lift is more suitable.

Many patients believe they will need a facelift to combat areas of the face they are unhappy with, but often this is not the case as a facelift will not fix any pigmentation or skin unevenness. Peels, such a high strength phenol peel, are often a much more effective way to target ageing of pigmented skin.
