There are many reasons why women opt have their breast implants removed. These include;

To improve appearance of augmented breasts if there is significant sagging or loss of volume. Breasts that have been enlarged with implants can still change shape as a result of natural ageing or weight gain/loss. In this situation, the breast implants may need to be removed or replaced.

To address complications related to the implants themselves e.g. capsular contracture, implant deflation or rupture, and rotation of anatomical (teardrop) implants. Although these diagnoses do not always require the implants to be removed, many women choose to have the implants removed or replaced.

Diagnosis of Breast Implant Associated Adult Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This requires removal of the implant and surrounding capsule. BIA-ALCL is commonly diagnosed during investigation of fluid collection around an implant (seroma) many years after the breast enlargement surgery.

Breast Implant Illness (BII). Some patients report a variety of symptoms that they attribute to their implants such as fatigue, brain fog, sleep disturbance and depression. To treat their symptoms, these patients may choose to have their implants removed.
