Is It Possible That My Lipoedema Has Caused Knee or Hip Arthritis?
Lipoedema is associated with hip and knee arthritis and this may be due to the significant weight on the legs and the strain placed on the hips and knees. Indeed, many lipoedema sufferers undergo joint replacement surgery.
In a study by Dr Joseph Stutz in 2011, he found abnormal fat accumulation at the upper inner thigh causes the legs to splay outwards, which leads to a change in the way the person walks. This places strain on the knee joint. By removing the abnormal fat, the change in the leg axis can be corrected.
