Prominent Ear Correction (Otoplasty)

Prominent ear correction, also called otoplasty or pinnaplasty, is an operation to set back ears that stick out. Ears usually stick out because the natural fold in the ear cartilage has not formed, because the bowl of the ear is deep, or both. Many people have been self-conscious about their ears since childhood.

Who is it suitable for?

Mr Karri performs prominent ear correction for adults only. One or both ears can be treated. The best candidates are in good general health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations of the result.

The operation

Prominent ear correction is performed as a day case at Kinvara Private Hospital under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation. A cut is made in the crease behind the ear, so the scar is hidden. The cartilage is reshaped with permanent stitches and, where needed, by gently scoring its front surface, and a small strip of skin may be removed from behind the ear. The operation takes about 1 to 2 hours for both ears.

Recovery

A padded head bandage is worn for about a week. You can shower after 72 hours, keeping the bandage dry; hair can be washed once the bandage is removed. After that, a soft headband is worn at night for about 6 weeks to protect the ears while you sleep. The ears are sore and swollen at first; the swelling settles over several weeks and is usually gone by 6-12 weeks. Most people return to desk work after about a week. Contact sports should be avoided for 6-8 weeks.

Risks of prominent ear correction

Scars / poor scarring – the scar behind the ear occasionally becomes red, raised or keloid.

Bleeding and haematoma – a collection of blood under the skin causes increasing pain and needs prompt treatment. Contact us straight away if the pain worsens.

Infection

Asymmetry – the two ears may not match exactly.

Recurrence – the ears can move forward again over time.

Stitch problems – the permanent stitches can sometimes be felt, or work through the skin, and may need to be removed.

Over-correction – ears set too close to the head, or an unnatural shape.

Numbness or sensitivity to cold – usually temporary, but can occasionally be permanent.
